WINDERMERE
|
My halau, my school of hula, was born on the Big Island of Hawai`i in 1983, during a simultaneous eruption of two volcanoes, Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea. The name was chosen with care and concern, as all names in Hawai`i have deep meaning and profound significance. The meanings are layered in each case. The literal meaning of Malamalama O Ka Mahina is "light/enlightenment of the moon" The kaona, the deeper meaning, speaks to “enlightment, clarity of thinking and knowledge” and guides our hula experience. Hina is the Goddess of the Moon. Mission Statement: To perpetuate and promote the Hawaiian culture through my own ongoing training/learning while, at the same time, teaching what I learn....through hula, Hawaiian language, chant and mele. During both learning and teaching it is critical to maintain and mālama time-honored traditions. Always with aloha. ALOHA IS...Aloha - love, affection, compassion, mercy, pity, kindness,
charity; greeting, regards; sweetheart, loved one; beloved, loving; to love,
show kindness, mercy, pity, charity, affection; to remember with affection;
to greet, hail. -Hawaiian Dictionary, Pukui & Elbert
